Annual Report 2006-07
Message from Susan Lerner, President, 2006-2007
The year 2006-07 was a blockbuster for the Junior League of Miami!
As the League celebrated its 80 anniversary, our flagship projects Inn Transition North and Inn Transition South continued housing, training and offering hope to hundreds of women and their children as they lifted themselves out of the cycle of domestic violence.
The Junior League of Miami awarded a record number of college scholarships, spearheaded several other volunteer projects, expended more than $300,000 in program services and achieved combined fundraising of more than $300,000, capped off by the InStyle event on Miami Beach for the third consecutive year.
At our 80th anniversary Miami Magic gala, with nearly 500 guests and past presidents spanning four decades in attendance, we paid tribute to our honorees for their work in our community: historian and founder of Miami’s Black Archives Dorothy Fields, artist Xavier Cortada, entrepreneur and philanthropist Ken Goran and baseball great Alex Rodriguez.
Once again the Junior League of Miami honored outstanding women volunteers in our community for the annual Women Who Make a Difference award. The 2007 recipients were Judy Barr, Constance Collins, Katherine Ezell, Sister Sheila Foy and Kemba Gosier.
At our May annual meeting, we honored our own outstanding members when we bestowed the coveted JLM Annual Awards: Sustainer of the Year Jeannett Slesnick; Volunteer of the Year Jamie Adams; Rebecca Herndon Bush award Keith Landon; and Provisional of the Year award Elvira Larrain.
The crowning achievement as we entered our 90th decade was the record number of women joining our organization. In 2006-07 we welcomed 91 provisional members into the fold as trained volunteers. More than100 new provisionals signed on for 2007-08. This upward trend in membership confirms that we have adapted to the busy lives of women and our dynamic and diverse community. The trend bodes well for the future of the Junior League of Miami and Miami-Dade County.
During this year, the Junior League of Miami celebrated 80 years of service to the Greater Miami community. A series of fundraising events supported the League's focus on families at risk, enabling significant funds to be channeled back to our community through partnerships with many social service agencies who help those in need on the front lines every day.
