JLM Kathryn Menke Miller Award

Past winners

This distinction is awarded to Miami-Dade County high school graduating senior girls for outstanding community service. The JLM Policies set forth the process for the awards as follows (updated April 2006):

1.     In October, the Community Service Award Committee will attend a county-wide CAP meeting to introduce all Miami-Dade County public high schools to the Kathryn Menke Miller award program. At the meeting, the program’s purpose and guidelines will be presented along with scholarship applications. By March 1, each school is asked to select a graduating female student who best exemplifies a commitment to the community through her community service work to receive the award based on the criteria established by the committee. The recipient is also asked to submit a scholarship application.  Each recipient will then be invited to attend the April General Membership Meeting where they will be recognized for their accomplishments. At that same time, the recipient of the scholarship will be announced and awarded. Committee members will also plan to attend the recipient’s annual awards ceremony to re-present the scholarship. The Community Service Award Committee will coordinate activities at the April GMM to present the awards.

2.     At the March Board of Directors meeting of the Junior League of Miami, Inc., the Vice President of Finance, the Vice President of Communications and the Chair of the Community Service Award Committee will make a recommendation regarding the approval of a scholarship on behalf of the Junior League of Miami Inc. to be awarded to a recipient of the Kathryn Menke Miller Award.

3.     If the Board of Directors approves the scholarship, the Community Service Award Committee will notify the recipient of the availability of the scholarship.  It will be awarded at the April General Membership Meeting to one individual in an amount no less than $500 and no more than $1500.

4.     Only recipients of the Kathryn Menke Miller Award will be eligible for the scholarship in the year that they receive their award. The scholarship shall be used for a college undergraduate education at accredited institutions or at accredited vocational/technical programs for which a degree is earned.  Educational institutions are not limited by geography.

5.     A panel comprised of at least the outgoing, current and incoming President, the incoming and outgoing Chairs of the Community Service Award Committee; one past President, and two members of the Community Advisory Board will review the scholarship applications.  Personal aspirations, career goals, volunteer and work experience, and academic achievements will be considered equally in evaluating the applicants.

6.     Scholarship checks will be made out jointly to the student and the educational institution.  Accordingly, each student must endorse the check over to the educational institution to be applied toward tuition, student housing (if through the educational institution), or books (if purchased through the institution). Any other circumstances must be approved by the Board of Directors at the March meeting.
