Fall 2003

Issue Highlights

Miami: Who Makes A Magic City

By Maria Beguiristain

We are pleased to announce the Junior League of Miami’s new signature event, “Miami: Who Makes A Magic City,” which will be held on November 1, 2003 at Fairchild Tropical Garden. That evening, the Junior League of Miami will honor individuals who make Miami what it is...cosmopolitan, cultural, generous, eye-catching, diverse, fun, and, in a word, magical.
The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail pre-party limited to 100 individuals, the honorees, and their guests. The pre-party will include a tram ride through Fairchild and the first cocktail party held in Fairchild's lush rain forest. Neiman Marcus at Merrick Park and Mariposa at Merrick Park will sponsor the kickoff to the evening.
The pre-party will be followed by more festivities open to a larger audience of 500 people. The sights and sounds of different neighborhoods from our community will be represented. Cuisine and drinks typical of South Beach, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, and Little Havana will be offered throughout the evening, catered by Sara Sharpe. A silent auction will also be held. Tickets for the general party are $85 and available online. Pre-party tickets are sold out.

Membership Outreach

By Christy Falco

On September 9th, the Membership Committee hosted the first Open House of the 2003-2004 League year for prospective members at The Museum of Science. The Open House took place during the hour prior to the year’s first General Membership Meeting, which was also open to the prospective members. It was so much fun to meet 40 new women who displayed such great interest in our wonderful organization. We wish them all a fantastic provisional year.

Women building better communities. That’s the Junior League. “ ~ AJLI
Spread the word among your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and sorority sisters: JLM is in search of women who have a commitment to volunteerism. Tell them what we are all about and why you are proud of being a member of the Junior League of Miami. Encourage them to log on to our website and to fill out our on-line Membership Application. Persuade them to learn more about JLM by attending one of the Open Houses. You are our best tool for recruiting new members. Please email names & addresses of prospective members to Christy Falco.

Corporate Outreach
The Membership Committee will travel to various local businesses this year and make a short presentation about membership in The Junior League of Miami to interested employees. If you work for a business (or if you know of one) that would host us for one hour in their board room or lunch room, please email Chair Christy Falco, Chair, falco19@bellsouth.net or Chair-Elect Jennifer Pfleger, jmphins@aol.com.

JLMarvelous

A special thanks to Rita Dargham and the Training Committee, for their excellent training program on September 17th. The speakers were interesting, informative, and engaging. I think we all learned a lot that night.

Many thanks to Wolfe’s Wine for changing a tire, in 90-degree weather, for a stranded Junior League member in front of their store. Jeff and Christie Wolfe are good neighbors and true friends.
Hats off to Keith Landon, Tere Hernandez-Acosta and Natalie Brown for their work on the layout and printing of the Community Partner materials. Good job, Ladies!!

The annual Sustainer Brunch, sponsored by the Encore Shop, was held on September 16th at the home of Teresa Zohn. Encore Shop Tri-Chairs, Andrea Marquez, Kara Kautz-Moss, Bibi Cruz-Ledon and the rest of the Encore Shop Committee did an outstanding job and we wish to thank them for all their hard work. The Sustainers heard about many volunteer and social activities at the meeting and a survey was taken to plan the remainder of the Sustainer year. We look forward to seeing many Sustainers at all future events.

A special JLMarvelous to Andrea Marquez for generously donating the delicous wines for the Shopping Social. Andrea delivered two cases of great wines — Cotes du Rhone and Vouvray! The lovely wines certainly helped the shoppers find their party moods!

Welcome to the new 2003-2004 provisional class. Super Saturday was held at the Omni Colonnade Hotel on September 20 and it was a huge success. Thanks to our guest speakers, Claudia Kitchens and Victor Diaz, Jr., to the Omni Hotel, and to Steven Marks and the law firm of Podhurst Orseck for donating photocopying and notebooks.

Kudos and a very special JLMarvelous thank you to Kristin Pearce for arranging and executing a fun-filled evening at our first Shopping Social at HQ. The crowd was merry, filled with friends and shoppers for a great night of socializing and shopping. Thank you, Kristin!

Molly Member Spotlight

By Keith Landon, VP Communications

This is the first in a series of spotlights featuring active members of the Junior League of Miami. In addition to giving you information about your board members this year, we thought it would be nice to get to know some of our active members as well.
Molly Osendorf delighted me with her wit and candor as we attempted our try at an “interview.” Molly hails from Minneapolis and has lived in Miami for seven years and been a member of JLM for three years. Her current placement is Done In A Day, and she is really looking forward to their first event as a committee for the Race for the Cure on October 18. She likes the idea that we can take on events with DIAD that we might not otherwise be able to do. She has loved her time as a JLM member, and has used it to hone new skills. Her favorite placement so far was working on the Chili Splash committee in its inaugural year. She loved watching the event’s identity unfold in the months leading up to the event in April 2002. Some committees she has yet to serve on but would like to are Membership and PR/Communications.
Not surprisingly, Molly’s favorite time of the day is the morning. She loves to relax, savor a nice cup o’joe and read the paper in a leisurely way. She is enjoying her new job working in communications/PR at Best Buddies, a local nonprofit organization. She has only been in her new job for two weeks, and is already embracing the challenges ahead. To that end, Molly thinks there are several key issues that JLM can look into supporting or advocating for in the future. Included in her list is the issue of advocacy for intellectually disabled citizens. She also thinks we should focus our energies on tackling health care and its availability for women and children in our society today. Parenting, and enhancing the skills of single parents is another avenue that Molly thinks we should explore.
Molly’s favorite ways to meet other JLM members outside of our general membership meetings have been varied. One of her favorites was the Encore Shop Anniversary party/wine tasting event last year. She also loved the Joanna’s Marketplace wine tasting, and would like to see a return to the small dinner parties of the past at JLM. Many thanks to Molly for her insight and views into her JLM experience!•
Look for the next “Molly Member” installment in the next Journal – and watch out, it could be YOU!

How to Nominate a Leader

By Deborah Corbishley

Every member has the right (and obligation) to help prepare the slate of nominees for President-Elect, six Vice Presidents, Recording Secretary, membership outreach committee and nominating committee. You can’t be in the room when we make the actual decisions, but your voice can be heard through the straw ballot.

Nominees should have at least one active year in the League, and Vice-presidents should have at least one leadership role (or more) in the League. Membership Outreach candidates should reflect the diversity of the League, and at least half need to have five years or more in the League. Nominating committee members must fall into one of three age ranges (under 31, 32 to 37, and 38 and up). Nominating and membership candidates do not need to have leadership experience.

We welcome self-submissions, and you can explain why you or your nominee would be a good leader, especially if the relevant experience includes work done outside the League or includes professional experience. Please remember that the President-elect (Amy Sussman) does not attend nominating committee meetings and does not choose the slate. Amy and the new slate make the decisions for committee chairs in March through the Willingness to Serve forms. Nominating plays no role in the willingness to serve process.

This year in early December, we will mail a brief questionnaire to all members with leadership experience, seeking their willingness to be considered and any time or personal constraints that would interfere with service. These questionnaires will be destroyed once the slate is complete and they will not be shared with anyone outside the nominating committee, nor will the committee review them unless you are under serious consideration for a position.

The straw ballot will sent under separate cover, will be available at headquarters, at the November General Membership Meeting and on the JLM website. It is due, NO EXCEPTIONS, Dec. 2, 2003, in person or by fax, mail or email to Debbie Corbishley: 921 Sorolla Ave, Coral Gables, FL 33134, fax (305) 372-1861 (mark it to Debbie’s attention); email: dsc@knsacs.com.

PLEASE: do not leave the ballot at Headquarters; it will not be considered (because it will not be picked up). Your submission is confidential.

Girls Advocacy Project

By Vicky Lukis

This is the third year working with the Girls Advocacy Program (GAP) at the Miami-Dade Juvenile Detention Center. GAP is the only comprehensive project in the State of Florida, and one of the few in the nation, serving girls while they are in detention awaiting trial and/or commitment programs. These young girls, ranging in ages from 11 to 18, come into the juvenile justice system having histories of physical and sexual abuse. They are detained for a short period and we often have a unique challenge to impact their lives in two hours every other Thursday evening.

The Committee’s objective is to provide a program that helps to give these girls a strong sense of self, community and personal empowerment. As a result, we hope the girls will reject unhealthy relationships, substance abuse and the temptation to become involved in future criminal activity.

The Committee has an ambitious action plan that includes bringing various guest speakers to address topics including life skills, nutrition, music, dance, sports, and arts. Both Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are especially tough times to be detained. We hope to lift spirits by providing a party for both of these special occasions. This year we hope to include the many talents of our Sustainers who can contribute their time, expertise and networks to enhancing our programs.

These young ladies are in need of new board games, interesting books, travel size toiletries and tote bags in which to carry their personal belongings upon their release.

Program Development Gearing Up for Next Year

By Allison Freeland, Chair-Elect

The Program Development Committee is hard at work soliciting community project and community grant proposals for the 2004-2005 League year. This committee is responsible for presenting to the JLM Membership and Board 10 to 15 appropriate, well-defined community projects within JLM’s focus area that utilize budgeted funds and JLM volunteers and 10 to 15 organizations that fulfill community needs within our focus area and that are in need of cash grants but which do not need volunteers.
How can you help? We are always looking for new projects where we can provide volunteer hours and/or funding to make a significant impact on our community within the areas of homelessness, family violence, child health, child care/parent support and foster care. If you have any suggestions or ideas about organizations that need JLM involvement, please let us know. The deadline for submitting proposals for either community projects or community grants is Fri., Nov. 14, 2003 at 5 p.m. On January 13 at the General Membership Meeting, the projects under consideration will be presented to the members.
The application and details are available on the JLM website. Information and/or questions should go to Program Development Chair Karen Clement, Kclement@jcrew.com, or to me at
allisonfreeland@aol.com.

JLM Awards 2003 Scholarships

By Mayra Lindsey

Kathryn Menke Miller was a well admired member of the Junior League of Miami who passed away in 1985. She dedicated herself to our community’s children and to improving our public education system. To salute the memory of Ms. Miller, each year the JLM presents an award named in her honor to female high school seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to community service through their volunteer activities. These awards are presented to an outstanding female senior at each of the high schools in our community.
The recipient of the Kathryn Menke Miller award is acknowledged at her graduation commencement and is also invited to apply for a Junior League College Scholarship. Each scholarship application we receive is carefully reviewed and considered. Our criteria for awarding the scholarship is a commitment to community service and to the pursuit of education.
This year we had the pleasure to award $500 JLM college scholarships to three outstanding young women:
Marisa Gopaul graduated from Miami Beach Senior High and is attending the University of Florida. Marisa plans to become a doctor and establish free medical facilities in developing countries.
April Ivy graduated from Design and Architecture Senior High and is attending Tufts University. April plans to become a biomedical engineer because of her interest in the environment.
Jacqueline Reyes graduated from Felix Varela Senior High School and is attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to become a pilot and astronaut.

JLM Welcomes Inn Transition South Residents

By Heidi McInnis

Inn Transition South is a 56 unit apartment complex in South Dade for victims of domestic violence and homelessness. The volunteers provide residents with monthly life skills training as well as recruit other community organizations to volunteer their time.
Our first workshop was a Welcoming Event to familiarize the ITS residents with our program. We were thrilled to have 10 mothers and more than 60 children in attendance. The mothers were given an overview of our goals and objectives for the year. We also surveyed them as to the types of future workshops in which they would like to participate.
While the adults were busy “working” to design a program to meet their needs, the children were busy “playing.” Laurel Auerbacher, Lisa Coots and Tricia LeClair coordinated the children’s activities which included arts and crafts, games, an egg toss and relay races. The children were very proud of the photo scrapbooks they made and will continue to build throughout the year.
The success of this first workshop was due to the hard work and dedication of the entire 25-member ITS Committee. Special thanks to: Melissa Farrell and Megan Courtney for cooking up a Brunch Extraordinaire; Raquel Vega for serving as interpreter and Legal Expert for the day (legal advice turned out to be in great demand that day); Heidi McInnis and Teresa Thornburg for putting together a closet of clothes and shoes donated by the JLM Encore Shop and committee members; and Michael Spivack (husband of ITS Co-Chair, Liz Spivack) for organizing a basketball game for more than 20 children.
Teresa Thornburg and Shontell Humes will coordinate our next event, a financial workshop, on October 11th.
Prior to the start of school, the ITS committee outfitted the children with backpacks through Project Upstart filled with school supplies donated by JLM members. The Committee is now collecting car seats. If you have a car seat that you would like to donate, please call us.

Hurwit Crisis Nursery

By Ashley Cusack and Morgan Smith

Hurwit Crisis Nursery is a home for children between the ages of newborn and 12 years old who are between foster homes. Junior League volunteers enjoy two different activities with the children, taking the 5 to12 year olds on a field trip one Saturday per month and staying at the nursery with the younger children while the others go on the trip.
The field trips provide an opportunity for the children to experience something they may not get to do otherwise. Examples of planned field trips are the Miami Children’s Museum, iceskating, horseback riding, Parrot Jungle, Metro Zoo, and more. Activities for the younger children in the nursery are also planned.
The committee would love for all members to participate in these special Saturday events. The dates are October 11, November 8, December 20, January 17, February 21, March 20, April 17 and May 8.
If you are interested in joining the committee for this extremely rewarding project, please contact Ashley Cusack or Morgan Smith.

Fund Development

As a result of last year’s fund development process, there are five exciting fundraisers for this Junior League year. They are the Encore Shop, Community Partners, Miami: Who Makes A Magic City, Chili In the Village and the Women Who Make a Difference Luncheon.
Fundraising is the backbone of the Junior League’s success in our community. It is through the funds we raise and our volunteers’ generous hearts that we are able to touch the lives of countless women and children in the Miami-Dade area. Last year the Junior League of Miami provided approximately $85,000 to the community. Without our fundraising efforts, these important contributions would not be possible.
All members are encouraged to get involved in the simple process. Anyone with an idea for a fundraiser should fill out a fundraiser application for the 2004-2005 Junior League year. The applications are available on the website, under fundraising, or at headquarters. Applications are due Nov. 21, 2003 and are required to be completed for new and existing fundraisers. Once applications are submitted, the fund development committee will complete a preliminary evaluation, host Fund Development presentations, present the fundraisers to the Board of Directors, and at the March general membership meeting, the membership will vote on the fundraisers for the 2004-2005 year.
An ideal fundraiser provides the highest possible monetary return in relation to the volunteer hours required. It is also in line with the overall vision of the Junior League of Miami to empower Miami’s women, children, and families to conquer tomorrow’s challenges and to build a united community.
Remember there are no requirements for League members to purchase tickets or work shifts for our fundraisers, so please generously support our valuable fundraisers this year.

Community Partners

By Meredith Mills and Sheri Shoup, Co-Chairs

Community Partners is beginning its second year. Thank you again to everyone who helped to make the inaugural year a success – we raised over $90,000! We look forward to another great year to reach our new goal of $100,000.
If you have ideas for corporations, foundations or individuals the committee should contact, please let us know. We can make the contact or if you prefer to make an “ask” yourself, we will be more than happy to provide you with the materials that explain the Community Partners concept and all of the ways the Junior League uses the donations to make a difference in the community. Remember the more money that we raise – the more we can put back into Community projects and grants.
If you have questions or need materials, please contact either Meredith Mills or Sheri Shoup.

Did you know...

If you make a donation to the United Way this year through your workplace, you can earmark the donation for the Junior League of Miami! Please let Meredith Mills or Sheri Shoup know if you earmark the funds so that you can be recognized as a Community Partner.
