Issue Highlights

Greenberg Traurig partners with JLM for new project,
"Domestic Violence Is Your Business: a Corporate Response Initiative"

By Rubye Nell Johnson, Domestic Violence/Workplace Co-Chair

Domestic violence in the workplace is emerging as a vital social issue in the battle to protect women and their children. It is a violent concept that penetrates the ears with a lump in the throat as it drips in the air creating a feeling of disbelief, enveloping us with a sense of bruised humanity.

It is the same sense we experience when the subject is expressed about domestic violence in general. The two concepts are inseparable because domestic violence in the workplace is a direct extension of violence, which has already erupted within the home environment. These twin concepts are the impetus for the internal JLM Domestic Violence Is Your Business: A Corporate Response driven project.

"Domestic violence is everybody's business" is our undergirding philosophy, whether our focus is in the workplace or in the home. To breathe life into this philosophy, the Junior League of Miami designed a project entitled Domestic Violence is Your Business: A Corporate Response. The major goal of this project is to ensure that EVERY business understands the effects that domestic violence has on the workplace and takes appropriate action to respond to the problem.

It is safe to say that, albeit most businesses know that domestic violence is affecting their bottom line, very few businesses understand how to identify employees who are victims, and even fewer have workplace domestic violence policies and support systems to assist their employees. In fact, only 28 percent of U.S. companies have policies addressing workplace violence in general, and only a handful of businesses have specific policies addressing domestic violence in the workplace. We need to start to increase this percentage for businesses now.

This is one reason why our committee takes great pride in announcing Greenberg Traurig, P.A. as the JLM's founding corporate partner in this initiative. Greenberg Traurig is an internationally known law firm, based in Miami, employing 1,800 people (two-thirds of whom are women), and operating 18 offices throughout the U.S. and abroad. Greenberg Traurig has demonstrated its progressive position in our corporate community on addressing domestic violence in the workplace, by developing and institutionalizing its own policy and guidelines to support their employees who are victims of domestic violence.

In light of the collaborative efforts of our two organizations, the Junior League was invited to participate in the law firm's domestic violence in the workplace design and implementation strategy; hence the partnership was formed. Our intention is for additional corporate leaders in our community to follow suit.

Domestic Violence Is Your Business is a new in-League project. It is designed to be the lifeline for employed women and their children who are victimized by domestic violence. In many instances, women may not know of community-based resources that will assist them to cope with emotionally and/or physically abusive living situations. Our project will be a filtering system for those seeking such resources.

Considering the fact that a large percentage of women are employed outside their homes, the workplace is an ideal setting for women to seek assistance. To educate businesses to respond appropriately to the 13,000 acts of violence committed against women in their workplace annually by their partners, the project will provide the necessary support for businesses to assist their employees.

This is just what Greenberg Traurig's domestic violence policy has been designed to accomplish. Greenberg Traurig's policy is comprehensive in that the purpose is clearly stated, it defines the concept, and addresses areas such as confidentiality and workplace support options. In addition, Greenberg Traurig is preparing to address areas such as appropriate roles of managers/ supervisors/lawyers and employees in how to respond to victims in their workplace, unpaid leave, and other rights that victims and survivors of domestic violence have within this particular law firm.

Stacey Pastel Dougan, Assistant General Counsel for Greenberg Traurig, P.A. explains, "Greenberg Traurig has taken a proactive stance on this issue not only because we realize it's the right thing to do, but also because we know that it affects our bottom line."

For example, the firm knows that in the U.S., domestic violence is the single leading cause of injury to women; over ten women per day are killed by their husbands or partners; and that a woman is beaten by her husband or boyfriend every 7.4 seconds.

And on the business side of the ledger, Greenberg Traurig understands that each year, worker absenteeism, increased health care costs, higher turnover and lower productivity, due to domestic violence, cost American businesses between three and five billion dollars.

The combination of the violence inflicted upon women, and the need to ease the drainage of precious dollars from corporate America's bottom line, is the message the League and our founding corporate partner, Greenberg Traurig want to get out to the business community.

This glimpse of reality can make the difference between life and death for many women in corporate America. And it can turn up the volume of the mantra, "not one more," victim of domestic violence should we tolerate in our community.

Thus far we have focused externally, but be reassured that this project is committed to the well-being of League members who may be victims and/or survivors of domestic violence. As we put pen to paper, a sub-committee of our project is being staffed to ensure that JLM's internal domestic violence guidelines, communications, and outreach strategies are up to the task of meeting the needs of our membership.

Our goal is to create a nurturing environment within our League to provide JLM members who are victims of domestic violence with safe and confidential paths to existing resources. Knowledge of services and an empowering spirit necessary to seek support and information on their options and ultimately choices available to them is a critical component of this project.

The League under the auspices of the Domestic Violence Is Your Business project can play a pivotal leadership role in assisting businesses throughout the community with the information and tools they need to respond to domestic violence in the workplace. This is a proven fact as the project has already exceeded its self-imposed goal in that we have secured one of the four targeted corporate partners for this League year.

The multidisciplinary approach employed by the project - to get businesses to invest in its goals - is congruent, with the League's overall focus on increase public awareness on family violence, as is outlined in our "Strategic Plan and Five Year Goals 2000-2005" document.

The League's most valuable resource, that being its membership with volunteers who are skilled across the spectrum, but particularly those with business acumen, are formidable in their determination to carry the battle cry of "not one more victim."

This Committee and the League overall are uniquely poised to make a difference in the lives of women and children who are victims and survivors of domestic violence in the twenty-first century.

A Look Back in Time Part II: The 1930s and 1940s

By Charlotte Luer, V.P. Communications

This year, the Junior League of Miami celebrates its 75th anniversary! What better time to take a look back in time at the efforts of our league predecessors?

The Great Depression served as the key issue facing league members in the 1930s.
To assist the community, JLM raised money through the Annual Charity Ball, a Thrift Shop at 304 North Miami Avenue, a Rummage Tea, Town Hall Series, and Burdines Day. Projects included the Children's Home Society, Children's Theatre and WIOD Radio Children's Dramatic Readings.

By the 1940s, World War II became an integral part of league activities as members focused on the war and national protection. Projects such as the Children's Theatre were disbanded during the war's duration and the Thrift Shop was staffed by paid employees to enable members to coordinate war efforts.
By 1947, the Miami Children's Theatre was reactivated, and by 1949, League volunteers once again staffed the Thrift Shop.

The Sustainer Group was formed in 1949, the same year League members helped found the Junior Museum of Miami. A little seed money and a lot of volunteer hours soon turned into the Museum of Science, Miami-Dade's most visited museum.

From the President Debbie Korge: Choose to Vote

"Elections are about choices." -- Sen. Joseph Lieberman

There are many choices available to us at election time. We can choose to vote or not to vote. Unfortunately, increased voter apathy shows that more and more voters are choosing not to exercise this privilege.

In the Miami-Dade County primaries that were held on September 5, election officials announced that only 30 percent of registered voters went to the polls, which means about 70 percent chose not to vote. If we do choose to vote, we have many choices available to us. We can choose to vote for a strict party ticket or across party lines, we can vote to keep the status quo or to change it, we can choose to vote on the issues or we can choose to vote based on a candidate's experience, education, background, etc.

This election year, 52 percent of the national electorate are women. Just think, 1,200 are members of the Junior League of Miami and approximately 190,000 are members of other Junior Leagues in the United States. That's a lot of voting power if each of us chooses to vote and encourages those in our circles of influence to do so! Even more interesting political and election experts have found that a great number of these female voters are still undecided, the highest percentage since the late 1970s, and these experts agree that this undecided group of women may be the one that determines the outcome of November's election.

Many of you may be a member of this undecided group, which is understandable. There is a lot going on locally, statewide and nationally that has to be considered.
If you are part of this undecided group, please don't choose to not vote but instead choose to look at the candidates and the issues and decide what is important to you, your family and your community and vote accordingly.

If you know somebody who is planning to "sit out" this election, encourage them to vote. Voting is a privilege that we should always choose to exercise.

As Jack Levine from the Center for Florida's Children has told our membership in past meetings, our system of elections is not convenient for working families and many choose not to. After all, the parents must get their children up and off to school before they go to work so there is no time then, and their polling places are by their homes not their offices so they can't go at lunch time.

After work they have to hurry to get the children before the afterschool programs close, and then there is dinner, homework, etc. By this time, the polls are closed or they are just too tired to go out again.

I know some of you face this dilemma but again, I encourage you to make the choice to find the time to vote because you and your families are the ones who could be most affected by the outcome of the elections.

By the time you receive this Journal, there will only be a few weeks until Election Day. I ask that you use that time wisely to decide to vote and to how you will vote and to encourage others to follow your example. Hopefully, I will see you at the polls.

Executive Column By Karen Cabrera, V.P. Community

The League year has already begun for our community projects.

Once again, the members of the Agape committee will be going on two Sundays each month to the Women's Center to provide arts and crafts projects for the women residents and their children. Our goal is to help the mothers develop positive parenting skills while providing a creative and artistic atmosphere.

Done In A Day has already staffed its first event, the United Way Kick Off, on August 17. Coming up, we can look forward to The Domestic Violence Walk, September 23, The Race for the Cure, Oct-ober 14, and The Bloom-ingdale's Shopping Benefit, October 24.

Girl Scouts, Hand in Hand, is looking forward to another successful year of bringing together girls in the Shenandoah neighborhood with the Girl Scout program and Healthy Habits will be cooking up great meals at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Adolescent unit.

Inn Transition North begins its eleventh year with a new roof and a new lease with Miami-Dade County for the next ten years. Additionally, the building has been painted, some interior renovations have been tackled and occupancy is running at 100 percent.

Inn Transition South looks to undergo the most change this year. Ground- breaking occurred last spring and the opening date at the end of the summer of 2001. Committee members are overseeing construction progress, looking for furnishings for the apartments and planning the programs for future residents.

Public Affairs plans to let the membership know who they are and what they stand for while also planning advocacy campaigns for domestic violence and early childhood development.

Our newest projects are also up and running. Domestic Violence is Your Business is off to an incredible start, securing Greenberg Traurig as a corporate sponsor. This committee's focus ensures that every business that the committee works with will understand the effect that domestic violence has on the workplace and that the business will take appropriate action to respond to the problem of domestic violence.

KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work) partners the JLM with the Dade Coalition for Community Education. Using the KAPOW curriculum, children will connect what they are learning in the classroom to the world of work. Plans for this committee include teaching in a local elementary school and then a work site visit. Parents will also have an opportunity to participate.

Project L.O.V.E. (Linking Opportunity to Volunteer Efforts) will provide young people living in an at risk environment with the opportunity to help others by creating a "Basket of Love" to donate to other people in need. The project's goal is to introduce these children to voluntarism and its benefits and to have the opportunity to mentor the children during the making and delivery of the baskets.

Over 100 JLM volunteers are involved in making each of these projects a success. I am looking forward to working with each chair and committee member to make a difference in our community.

If you would like more information on our current community projects or to volunteer, please contact me.

Reminders from Planning Council

By Debbie Corbishley, V.P. Planning

The Planning Council would like to remind all JLM members of the following:

1. Please do not ask for donations without calling Fund Development first.
All active and provisional members are reminded that BEFORE you should ask any company or individual to donate money or goods/services (food, art supplies, paper goods, meeting rooms, staff, etc.), call or email Michelle Charles (Fund Development Chair) to clear the solicitation with her.

We want to make sure that we develop a list of donors, thank them for their donation, and provide them with information about the League. We also want to ensure consistency in the solicitation and prioritization of the requests we make. Some of our donors may get four or five requests in a single week, which can hurt our efforts. Thank you for helping us get our fundraising efforts on track by complying with this policy.

2. Planning Council Meeting, October 17, 2000, 7:00
All League members are invited to the Planning Council meeting on October 17 at 7:00 p.m. at headquarters. The focus of the meeting will be the program development process and how it can be adapted to be more flexible and encourage development of more ambitious, signature projects.

This is not a discussion of how to apply this year, but a future planning session to see what changes can or should be made. Time permitting, we will also discuss how to increase membership involvement in community action and the historic impact of the League. For more information, email me.

Take 10...to the Golden Palm Gift Market

By Barbie Alderman, GPGM Volunteer Shift Scheduling Chair

The GPGM committee realizes that no matter how much we plan the key to the success of this JLM fundraiser is our membership. We need every member to make an effort to attend the GPGM.

So, how can you help? TAKE 10. It's that simple. Just TAKE 10 of your friends, family, colleagues, and neighborsand bring them to the GPGM. If every member were to do this the impact on the GPGM attendance would be staggering!

Here are a few suggestions of how you can TAKE 10 to the GPGM

  • A personal note goes a long way! Take 10 GPGM flyers and attach a personal note asking the recipient to attend this event to support the efforts of your organization.
  • Be my guest! If your budget allows, buy a few extra Market Day tickets and drop them in envelopes with a short personal note to friends. Invite them to be your guest at the GPGM and ask them to bring along a friend or two as well. (Don't forget to include a flyer with the $2.00 off coupon on it, too!)
  • Organize a "working lunch" on Friday, November 17 with your colleagues and plan to come to the GPGM to work on your holiday shopping lists! Traffic in the area is light at lunchtime and popping over for a "working lunch" would be easy. JoAnna's Marketplace hosts the Tea Room with scrumptious selections for lunch. Plus, there will be special Woman's Day events taking place, too.
  • Mom's morning out! After you have dropped the kids off at school early on Friday, November 17, round up the other Moms and take a detour to the GPGM. The Market opens at 8a.m. on Friday and there will be free fresh coffee, breakfast pastries, and parking. Make sure to let the other Moms know in advance so everyone can arrange for this little break from their daily routine.
  • Field Trips Welcome! Those of us with small kids know the value of having an interesting venue to take our stroller-sized little ones to visit. Organize a field trip to the GPGM. Children under 12 are free and Moms can shop leisurely and enjoy a bite with your friends at the Tea Room.
  • Beat the Happy Hour blahs. Make Friday night, November 17 something special. Break from your weekly routine and get a group of colleagues and friends to come to the Mambo by Moonlight Friday night fiesta! The $35 buys you amazing food AND drink from 7-10p.m. There will be great shopping plus silent and live auctions too! We promise that Friday night will not disappoint!
  • Just be sincere. Sometimes it's as easy as telling people we know how much the JLM means to you and the importance of the work we do in the community. This may be enough to convince them to make that special effort to come to this event. And, for a charity event, you can't beat the $10 ticket price ($8.00 with the coupon on the GPGM flyer!) and PARKING is FREE!

The families at risk in our community are depending on the JLM to come through for them. The GPGM is depending on the JLM membership to come through and be the key to our success. Thank you in advance for your support and enthusiasm. You will be hearing more TAKE 10 ideas at the October Area meetings. Let's all TAKE 10 to the GPGM.

Have you finished your holiday shopping yet?

By Susan Adams, GPGM Marketing Chair

The stores are festooned with garlands and wreaths, holiday carols fill the air and WHAT?? You haven't finished your holiday shopping yet?! O.K., it is only October, but we are so programmed to feel way behind, that yes, there is a tendency to panic at this time of year. But, have no fear, the Golden Palm Gift Market is, in fact, just around the corner, and it truly will be a "Shopping Extravaganza!"

Specialty merchants will gather at the Coconut Grove Convention Center to sell their fabulous merchandise, everything from toys and children's items to women's apparel, and unique gifts for everyone on your list.

Women's Day, Friday, 8 a.m. 5 p.m.: This day of pampering will include wonderful special events for our Sustainers, personalized makeovers, and demonstrations on home design and tropical gardening. Arrive early and enjoy fresh baked goods and coffee, while you browse through aisles and aisles of merchants, and hopefully, cross a few people off your list.

Mambo By Moonlight, Friday, 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.: This event will feature some of South Florida's restaurants, and an exciting silent auction, all set to a tropical beat.
Zany Brainy Presents Family Day, Saturday, 9 a.m. 5 p.m.: Your $10.00 ticket buys admission for both days, so join us again on Saturday for even more fun, as Zany Brainy presents character shows, photos with Santa, holiday choirs, face painting, tile painting, folk music and more.

Finish your holiday shopping, and celebrate over lunch at the Tearoom hosted by Joanna's Marketplace. And remember, this year there will be free parking!

You Can Help by Distributing Flyers, Envelope Stuffers

By Meredith Mills, GPGM Tickets Chair

There are several ways that you, as a Junior League member, can help promote the Golden Palm Gift Market.

We have colorful and informative flyers available and also envelope stuffers. If you need any of these materials for your business, or a business you frequent, please contact me and let me know how many you need. If you can run copies of the flyers off, we can supply you with an original.

All of us can help promote the Market. If you are involved in an organization that you would like the flyers mailed to - again - just give us an address and a contact name and they will be sent a group packet.

Packets are also available for schools. If you would be willing to take materials to your children's school, Meredith will send you a school packet.

It's easy to promote the Golden Palm Gift Market and we can help provide you with tools to make it even easier. Remember this is one of our major fundraisers - the more tickets we sell, the more money we can generate for our community projects!

Volunteer Shifts
Warning: if you have not scheduled your GPGM shift by now you need to get emailingor faxing to the Volunteer Scheduling Committee. Plenty of terrific time slots are available. Visit the JLM website and follow the prompts to the shift scheduling section!

Any Active or Provisional can find out their shift at the November GMM. Or you can email the committee.

Public Affairs Focuses on Legislative Concerns

By Sharon K. Johnson, Public Affairs Chair

The Public Affairs Committee is excited about the 2000-2001 League year.
The committee is looking forward to an educational and prosperous year in educating fellow league members in advocacy and voluntarism. We are also looking forward to taking public stands in issues that concern the League's causes and having our voices heard.

Many League members are unsure of their lobbying efforts or "know-how" in advocating for common goals. We hope to keep the members informed through our monthly articles educating and affecting efforts on all of our initiatives.

The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) serves as a liaison among the League's membership, community projects and collaborative organizations on legislative issues that impact the Junior League of Miami's focus population. The PAC plays a central role on a state level through its participation in the State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC). Through the PAC and SPAC, the Junior League is able to address specific issues, events or legislation that may require advocacy efforts.

The State Public Affairs Committee of the Junior Leagues of Florida has represented the interests of its member leagues, and the groups or issue areas addressed by their projects to policy makers at the State and Local levels. The informed and active participation of League members in government will work to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

SPAC members:

  • advocate for specific legislation relevant to member league issues.
  • educate Junior League members on Public Policy
  • coordinate the exchange of information from community based League projects to policy makers.

Look for upcoming articles on Public Policy Affairs 101.

Inn Transition North Update: We are good for another ten years!

By Susan Lerner, Inn Transition-North Co-Chair

The Junior League and Metro-Dade County renewed the Inn Transition North lease for another ten years, which will see us through our current funding for the program.

Assistant chair, Mayra Lindsay has graciously attended the Safe Space panel meetings to ensure that all of our available apartments are filled by the fall. Thank you, Mayra. On August 30, the Inn Transition North committee met for dinner at headquarters. The members were assigned a "mentee" and a monthly event to host.
This year's events include shopping at the Encore Shop, a holiday party at the Coral Gables Youth Center, a Heat game and movies in May. We'd also like to attend the circus and the Miami Seaquarium. If any Junior League member can help us arrange for tickets to these events or any other fun events, please let us know.

Provisionals are Super on Saturday

By Mariele Jones, Provisional Chair

Once again the Provisionals kicked off their year of education and training with Super Saturday at the Hyatt Coral Gables on Saturday, September 9, 2000.

Our Provisional Committee planned a day filled with fun and activities to help our provisionals get to know one another as well as the Junior League of Miami.

Our program included several activities designed to educate the provisionals about our mission and historical contribution to our community. By the end of Super Saturday our provisionals were able to articulate our mission and describe various projects that JLM has sponsored in the past. In addition our provisionals heard about current projects including the Golden Palm Gift Market from Amy Sussman and Barbie Alderman, and the Encore Shop from Brooke Austin and Michelle McDonald.

The provisionals met their mentors for the first time and began to discuss their mentor project. We are especially excited about the mentor projects this year, thanks to all of the committee/project chairs who submitted proposals, they are great. The provisionals will be able to choose from a list of projects related to JLM committees and projects or create their own projects that complement a JLM committee or project.

Thank you to Cherie Rogers, Assistant Chair, and Kyla Kowal-Caliendo, Provisional, for coordinating the arrangements at the Hyatt Coral Gables, we truly couldn't have done it without you.

Provisional Make-up Opportunities: The Race for the Cure (Done In a Day) October 14, 2000; Bloomingdales Shopping Day (Done In a Day) October 24, 2000. Remember, make-up opportunities will be updated at each Provisional Course Event, the web site and the Provisional Hotline 305-378-8290.

The First Junior League of Miami Training Session is scheduled for Wednesday, October 25, 7:00 p.m. at Headquarters. The topic is "Leadership and Public Speaking Skills." This session will cover how to run effective meetings, be a good leader and have confidence when public speaking, which are all useful skills in the League.

We hope to see you!
