Issue Highlights

Done in a Day Promotes Projects, Identity

By Michelle Ramirez-Patricios, DIAD Co-Chair

The main goal of the Done in a Day Committee this year is to make South Florida aware of all the worthwhile projects and events the Junior League of Miami participates in to serve our community.

To that end, DIAD will make available t-shirts for our members to purchase. Members will be able to wear these shirts or other identifiable apparel to Done in a Day and other JLM events to make our presence known!

Most importantly, DIAD has planned for the Junior League of Miami to participate in three great events this fall. They are the Domestic Violence Walk on Saturday, September 23 (Committee Member in Charge - Gail Scott), the Race for the Cure on Saturday, October 14 at Bayfront Park (Jennifer Rogers) and a great new event sure to delight all our members, the Bloomingdale's "Shopping Day" Fundraiser on Tuesday, October 24 (Carla Harris).

Tickets for the Bloomingdale's fundraiser will be available at all Junior League of Miami General Membership Meetings.

The Done in a Day Committee has been working all summer to plan the fall schedule and we encourage all League members to help represent us at these events. Done in a Day Projects are a great way to meet League members outside your current placements and a fantastic way to increase our visibility in the community at large while providing valuable and much needed service hours.

If you have any questions or are interested in participating in any of our fall events, please contact the Committee Members in Charge listed above for each event. You can also contact the committee by emailing co-chair Carla Harris. We look forward to seeing you at our events!

Become a Leader in the Junior League of Miami

By Barbie Alderman, Nominating Chair

Excerpted from the Sandspur, JL of Tampa

"There is more leadership in you and me than we use, than we know, than we can imagine."

Are you contemplating leadership? Do you feel the need for more involvement? Do you want to be part of the decision-making process?

  • If you answer yes to these questions, your next question will most likely be, "How can I be chosen for these positions?" The following are a list of hints to get you started on the road to a leadership position.
  • Demonstrate more involvement through your committee
  • Express your interests to your chairman and your placement advisor
  • Attend General Membership meetings
  • Volunteer to make announcements for your committee when needed at General Membership meetings
  • Volunteer to write articles for the Junior League Journal for your committee
  • Demonstrate your commitment through double placing or participating in other JLM events and fundraisers (outside of your placement)
  • Express your interest in writing through the two forms: The Straw ballot and the Willingness to Serve Forms (both will be distributed in the fall and available online.)
  • Discuss your desires with the President-Elect or Nominating Committee

Whether you are considering an assistant chair position or the Presidency, be realistic with your goals and expectations. There are different levels of leadership from which to choose, with varying degrees of responsibilities and time commitments. The key to selecting an appropriate leadership role for you is to become aware of the job requirements and recognize your interests and time availability.

Although the JLM 2000-2001 year seems to be just getting started, we start lining up the next year's leaders in the next few months. Stay tuned to this column for more information about leadership roles in the JLM.

Encore Shop Shifts: It's Your Money

By Michele McDonald & Brooke Austin, Encore Shop Co-chairs

As we begin the new League year, the Encore Shop Committee wants you to be aware of major changes regarding your shifts.

There is no more re-scheduling. At your annual placement meeting in April, you filled out a form asking what month/day/date would be most convenient to fulfill your shift (s). Our scheduling co-chair, Misty Taylor, later scheduled JLM actives and provisionals. If you later find out you can't work the shift you asked for, you must find someone else to work the shift for you OR you can "buy out" of the shift for $40.00.

If you can't work the shift, you must call Misty Taylor or her scheduling co-chair Jennifer Bennett at least 24 hours in advance of your scheduled shift. If you don't call Misty or Jennifer, you will face a $60 dollar fine, plus your $40 dollar "buy out."

If you get an invoice that says you owe $100 dollars for the above, you may contest it by appealing to the JLM Board. Other important notes to pass along: * Actives who did not reach the $500 or $1,000-plus quota last League year, need to complete either one or two shifts in this League year, depending on their donation amount. They can buy out if they wish. Provisionals must complete three shifts, and they can "buy out" of one for $40 dollars.

We will publish the latest quota/donation information in the JLM Journal every month, starting in October. If you want your quota/donation information anytime, you can FAX your request to the Encore Shop and you'll get a response within a week. Please, do NOT call the Encore Shop for quota information.

A corkboard has been placed in the Encore Shop office area with a "checklist" of how to properly bring your clothing/donations to the Encore Shop.

A white board has been placed in the Encore Shop office area for manager Betty Fernandez to write the "volunteer duties" of the day. JLM volunteers will need to check this board to see what needs to be done during their shifts.

With your help, we can continue to make the Encore Shop run smoothly and successfully.

From the President Debbie Korge

It is said that one of the three most traumatic experiences in a person's life is moving, right up there with the loss of a loved one and divorce. After the summer I have had, I doubt if I would ever question that statement.

My husband and I decided to divide the tasks regarding our move to make life easier for all concerned. Knowing that I can be somewhat emotional at closings, he arranged for me to not have to attend either of the closings, which he would handle but I got to deal with three movers, two moving loads and three children (one of whom let me know at least every two minutes that he was bored). Also, I got to unpack while he spent the next two days out of town on business. I definitely got the short end of that deal! However, in true Junior League style, I stepped up to the plate and delegated. Both of my older sons were responsible for unpacking and setting up their rooms and helping their little brother with his. Everything belonging in my husband's office and closet were left in boxes for him to unpack upon his return, so life settled down quickly.

The good thing about moving was that all of the closets, drawers, and cabinets got cleaned out and I easily met my Encore Shop requirements. I had forgotten that there is as much to donate after packing as before, which is commonly referred to as the "Why Did We Ever Bring This With Us Syndrome." The down side is that even after two months, things are still out of kilter and sometimes hard to find, such as the notes I had taken on voluntarism at a Junior League conference I had attended which would have made a great article. Hopefully, I will figure out where they are by next month's deadline.

In the meantime, summer is almost over, the children are back at school, vacation photographs have been put into the scrapbooks and the Junior League season is well underway! The community projects are going like gangbusters, our first general membership meeting is just days away, other non-profit organizations have made arrangements to "borrow" our headquarters for their meetings and Julia Bianchi and I were interviewed by The Coral Gables Gazette for an article about our headquarters, the Encore Shop and the Junior League in general. The Golden Palm Gift Market Committee has been hard at work to make this year's event the best yet and the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary Committee has been planning the party of the winter!

Thank you to all who have given of their time and energy to see that all this got done. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed and, during my less than tranquil summer, are truly appreciated by not just me but all League members. Perhaps I should see about forming a Junior League ad hoc committee to find my notes...

Executive Column By Debbie Corbishley, V.P. Planning

Can you estimate how many conversations you got into on Elian Gonzalez, and how much the members of our community knew about him and his family situation?

Now contrast that with how many conversations you have had about the family situation of children in Miami-Dade County, the needs they have and the efforts the Junior League of Miami is making to change the situation. How much does your community of friends, colleagues and neighbors know about what needs to be done and what they can do about it?

You are an important part of our strategic plan, and I challenge you to know as much about JLM and the situation of those we serve as you did about Elian. The ability of our community to care passionately has not been adequately tapped for the children who are here. JLM needs to tap and transform that passion. The first step is to educate ourselves, then to educate those around us who can help us make a difference.

We intend to make a difference, but we can only do it if our members talk about JLM and what we do in the community. We can only make the difference if we are taken seriously, and that only happens if we make serious commitments, keep our commitments, work diligently, and know what we are doing. We need to increase community awareness of our work, increase our effectiveness at that work, and raise money to support that work.

You are invited to join the Planning Council this year as we discuss the future of JLM. Meetings of the Council will be open to all JLM members at headquarters at 7:00 p.m. in September, October, November, February, March and April. In September, we will discuss the strategic plan, including why certain issues were selected and rejected. We will also discuss where Planning Council Members-at-Large will focus this year to help in the education process of JLM and the community.

In October we will discuss the project development process and the issue concerning our membership's involvement in community service and action. In November, we will discuss the financial issues facing JLM and member development. Spring topics will depend on what Members-at- Large decide to focus on as a result of our discussions in the fall and what our members tell us in the interim. Your participation is not only welcome but solicited!

Please read the strategic plan and help keep us honest in following it. In 2005, will we be able to point to the difference we made in domestic violence, homelessness, health, early childhood education, and foster care, and will we be proud of our financial stability? Or will we only be able to say that we went to a lot of meetings and showed up for our shifts and committees, but we don't know if it mattered? I'd like to think that each of us will build this community into one where every child is healthy, sheltered, educated, safe, and loved because we made a difference every day at some community project and in every encounter we had where someone could become impassioned about the needs and fate of a child in our community.

Help us also to make you a better informed, more effective member of the community and JLM. Your ability to make a difference and to know that you matter in making the difference is critical to our success and to yours. Let us know why you are reluctant to lead and what would make you more comfortable in assuming a leadership role. Let us know what you would love to do and why you are afraid or feel unqualified to do it. We want to develop you into an effective action force in your own right. Your future, JLM's future, and the future of the families in this community depend on you being effective and impassioned about your ability to change the situation in this community.

JLM developed an ambitious strategic plan. Let's try to exceed it.

You Should be Scheduled by Now

By Barbie Alderman, GPGM Volunteer Shift Scheduling Chair

The GPGM Volunteer shift scheduling is almost complete! Thank you to all of the actives and provisionals who have already signed up for their shift.

Remember every active and provisional must complete a four hour shift for the 2000 GPGM. The deadline for completion is November 18.

If you have not scheduled your shift yet it is not too late -but you must hurry. Many shifts have already filled up and there are virtually no spaces left in any pre-market shift. Email or fax your requests to us immediately.

The master schedule will be available at the September General Membership meeting and Provisional Super Saturday. If you have already requested a shift but are not certain of when it is, be sure to attend the September meetings or contact us by email or fax after September 13. The responsibility is yours to sign up and complete your four hour shift.

Thank you to all of the actives and provisionals who have already completed your GPGM shifts! We still have lots of work ahead of us at the 2000 GPGM Friday, November 17 and Saturday, November 18. If you have the time and would like to schedule an additional shift let us know!

Our volunteers are terrific and we appreciate your making time to work on the GPGM! Next month see this space for frequently asked questions (and their answers) about working at the GPGM!

Help Promote the GPGM

By Meredith Mills, GPGM Tickets Chair

There are two ways that you can help with this major League fundraiser (in addition to buying lots of tickets!)

1. If you have children in school and are willing to help with our School Program (don't worry you get an envelope with all of the details) Please contact Meredith Mills

2. If you know of groups that we should make sure flyers and information is sent to, please give Meredith the name and address of the organization, along with the name of a contact person if possible. We have a complete packet for groups that can be mailed out to them.

Thanks in advance for your assistance with this. Remember, it takes everyone to make all of our fundraisers successful!

How Can I Make a Difference?

The GPGM is just roughly 60 days away and we know that every member in the JLM has been and will be doing their part to make this event a success! Here are a few suggestions on how you can continue to help the GPGM, one of our organization's major fundraisers succeed:

  • Buy or sell ads in the GPGM Program Book. Ads range in price starting at $50. This is a great way to promote your business, send a personal or family greeting or get local businesses involved. The Program Book is given to every person that attends the GPGM. (We are talking about a distribution of thousands!). For more information contact Susan Adams.
  • Buy your GPGM tickets today! In addition to the minimum $10 ticket requirement, why not consider buying tickets for friends and colleagues and encourage them to come-and bring their friends! And don't forget the Friday night party Mambo By Moonlight. Those tickets will sell out so get your tickets early! And remember parking is free!

Send your comments to the GPGM committee so we can continue to implement your great suggestions or call the GPGM hotline at 305-476-3183.

This is everyone's event and the GPGM appreciates all your efforts in helping us achieve our goals!

May General Membership Meeting Minutes

By Peggy Hudson, 1999-2000 Recording Secretary

Tuesday, May 16, 2000

Call to Order: The Annual Meeting held at the Coral Gables Country Club was called to order on Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at 7:08pm by President Lyn Pannone.

President's Announcement: President Lyn Pannone welcomed all members present to the annual meeting. Lyn stated the past month in the Junior League of Miami, Inc. (hereinafter JLM) was a whirlwind of events. Lyn named a few of the events which occurred. Lyn announced JLM is negotiating its second 10-year lease for Inn Transition North during April. Lyn reported the Special Events Committee coordinated a fun Sunset Luau party.

Lyn stated two days later JLM hosted an Affinity Group Meeting, the POLL Meeting, put together by JLM Active Laurie Schobelock prior to the annual AJLI meeting. Lyn announced then the full 2000 AJLI Annual Conference took place the first week of May and was a great conference thanks to the Site Committee Chaired by Active Peggy Hudson. Lyn recognized the 2000 AJLI Annual Conference Site Committee members.

Lyn announced the day after the conference the Inn Transition South (ITS) groundbreaking occurred. Lyn stated Mayor Alex Penelas and Commissioner Dennis Moss spoke along with other dignitaries. Lyn also reported JLM was very honored to have the new AJLI President, Debra Britton, attend and speak at the ITS groundbreaking as her first official act as President. Lyn also reported a representative from the Housing a Urban Development (H.U.D.) attended the groundbreaking. Lyn stated the H.U.D. representative gave the land and a $2,500,000.00 grant to JLM for the ITS project.

2000-2005 Strategic Plan: Lyn announced the new five-year JLM Strategic Plan was finished after much feedback and input during the past two years. Lyn asked for a motion to ratify the new 2000-2005 Strategic Plan. V.P. Finance Susan Adams so moved. Lyn stated all JLM committee and project work is based on the contents and direction of the Strategic Plan, which in essence is a working document. The Strategic Plan was ratified.

2000-2001 Summary Budget: V.P. Finance Susan Adams stated the 2000-2001 Summary Budget was as appeared in the last Journal. Susan stated a motion was needed to approve the 2000-2001 Summary Budget. Active Karen Cabrera so moved. The motion carried.

Thanks to Fund Raiser Committees on the Finance Council: V.P. Finance Susan Adams recognized various members sitting on the Finance Council, especially Holly Battle, who does the JLM bookkeeping and creates the budget. Special recognition was given to the Encore Shop Committee, which raised approximately $7,000 at the Rummage Sale, the Golden Palm Market Committee, the Cookbook Committee, and the Headquarters Capital Campaign Committee.

Excused from Requirements Raffle Recipients: President Lyn Pannone and Active Ileana Renfroe presented the winners of the Excused Requirements Raffle as follows: Sherry Shoup has no Encore Shop quota or shift requirements for the 2000-2001 League Year; Julie Lincoln has no Golden Palm Market work shift or ticket purchase requirements for the 2000-2001 League Year; and Susan Bonner is exempt from all work shift requirements for all JLM fund-raisers and is excused from all meeting attendance requirements. Ileana Renfroe also presented a raffle prize to Dale Poster-Ellis which was a gift certificate for services from Victoria's Hair, a beauty salon.

Recognition of Outgoing Projects: President-Elect Debbie Korge reminded all members the Program Development Committee would be immediately seeking suggestions for community projects for the 2001-2002 League Year and that applications should be requested through their committee. Debbie announced five Committees are being retired from JLM at the end of this past League Year: Children's Cultural Connection, Gladstone Center for Girls, Kristi House, Lucha, Pace Ad Hoc Committee and the YWCA Saturday Matinee.

Super Leaguer Awards: V.P. Volunteer Resources Meredith Mills announced the Super Leaguers for the past three months. Meredith stated the March Super Leaguer was Sherri Rogers for her success in securing her employer, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, to adopt the YWCA Saturday Matinee project. Meredith stated the Special Events Luau Committee did a great job with their fund-raiser but that Peggy Falagan and Debbie Radosevich were the April Super Leaguers -- Peggy, for her efforts in providing insurance, table decorations, invitations and getting raffle prizes donated, and Debbie, for her efforts securing the Red Fish Grill site, the entertainment and more. Meredith announced the AJLI 2000 Annual Conference Site Committee all deserve to be the May Super Leaguers since all committee members did two or three placements, but that Bonita Whytehead and Debbie Dietz both went above and beyond in their efforts to make the Conference a success and, therefore, were awarded the May Super Leaguer recognition.

Katherine Menke Miller Community Service Award (KMMCSA): Katherine Menke Miller Community Service Award Chair Bonita Whytehead announced the KMMCSA would be presented in schools to winning recipients at the end of May and the beginning of June. President Lyn Pannone thanked V.P. Volunteer Resources Meredith Mills for all her hard work and dedicated efforts the past year. Special Events Chair Deborah Hohler presented Meredith with an orchid plant. President Lyn Pannone stated the orchid plants being presented were very well traveled orchids as the AJLI 2000 Annual Conference Site Committee members were responsible for Conference centerpieces and were raising money for JLM by now selling them for $30.00.

End of Year Awards: V.P. Communications Monique Armbrister stated it was her honor to present to the membership five people whose efforts were over and above the call of duty.

Sustainer of the Year: Monique introduced Sustainer Ann Kashmir, last year's recipient of the Sustainer of the Year Award, to present the award. Ann Kashmir announced Betsy Hoover as this year's recipient of the Sustainer of Year Award. Ann stated Betsy Hoover was recognized for many who have been touched by her life and that she had attended every Training Committee meeting this year. President Lyn Pannone added that Betsy has always been very, very active in JLM activities.

Volunteer of the Year: V.P. Communications Monique Armbrister announced Sara Oltmans-George as this year's recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award. Monique stated Sara served on the Encore Shop Committee for the past two years as its Chair and that Sara eats, sleeps and breathes her responsibilities to the Encore Shop Committee.

Rebecca Herndon Bush Award: Active Julia Bianchi announced Laurie Schobelock as this year's recipient of the Rebecca Herndon Bush Award. Julia stated Laurie was outstanding in her service to the JLM as a volunteer and as a volunteer to the community. Julia related Laurie's JLM volunteer service to include being editor for the Journal where she technically revamped the publication, helped the League become computer ready while serving as V.P. Communications, served as JLM President during the move and renovation of Headquarters all while serving on the Hurricane Relief Commission during the past 10 years, being on the Board of Directors of both the Girl Scouts and the Pace Center for Girls, and both volunteering and working at Fairchild Tropical Gardens.

Board of Directors Special Recognition Award: President Lyn Pannone announced two additional awards would be given this year at the discretion of the JLM Board of Directors. Lyn stated it was her distinct pleasure to honor Meredith Mills as the first recipient of the Board of Directors Special Recognition Award. Lyn stated she could not have done her job as President if it were not for the tenacity of Meredith who had to perform her job as V.P. Volunteer Resources with two key Chair positions on her Council having to be replaced mid-year.

President Lyn Pannone announced Peggy Hudson as the second recipient of the Board of Directors Special Recognition Award. Lyn stated Peggy has only been an Active for a few years but that even as a Provisional member Peggy always did two or three placements. Lyn related that this year alone Peggy served on the Executive Committee as Recording Secretary, was a Member-At-Large on the Planning Council, served on the Nominating Committee, and was Chair of the AJLI 2000 Annual Conference Site Committee.

Thank You to Outgoing President Lyn Pannone: President-Elect Debbie Korge announced it was her honor to present to President Lyn Pannone a parting gift on behalf of the Board of Directors for her guidance and leadership. President Lyn Pannone stated it was a personally rewarding year. Lyn thanked the Executive Committee for all the work its members performed.
