Dear Members:
It is with great pride that I write this last president’s message to you before turning over the gavel to our wonderful incoming President Lauren Harrison Genovese at our Annual Meeting on May 8th.
This year, our community projects have served hundreds of families; our cash grants have funded many worthwhile projects. Through the concerted efforts of Provisionals, Actives and Sustainers, our fundraisers have raised over $300,000. Membership Outreach set its goals high and met them by recruiting over 100 provisionals for the second year in a row. And, for the first time, JLM awarded substantial college scholarships to stellar community-conscious high school seniors for them to pursue their career goals.
The league year topped off this past weekend on South Beach for our final fundraiser as we partnered for the third year with InStyle magazine for Inside InStyle. Over 1,500 people flocked to the white tents on the sandy beaches off Ocean Avenue and 11th Street for a weekend of fashion and fun, courtesy of nearly 100 pink-shirted JLM volunteers and InStyle’s equally amazing staff. Kudos to chair Jennifer Wilson and her assistants Sheffield Macintyre, Jamie Adams and Betty Lopez-Castro. Special thanks to all of the InStyle divas who bought tickets and those who volunteered the entire weekend.
I close by thanking you for giving me the opportunity to serve as the president of our fine organization this year and for giving your time, support and dedication to JLM. I thank this year’s Board of Directors and the entire leadership team for their hard work. And, I wish Lauren, the incoming Board and leadership team all the best for what I know will be another great year!
Regards and farewell,

Susan S. Lerner

March 26, 2007
Dear Members:
Hard to know who to thank first. I’ll start with our provisionals. Headquarters has never looked so good after their spring cleaning! Please visit the beautiful garden our provisionals created as part of their Gloves are Off project next time you’re at HQ. We also received this thank you card for the provisionals’ work at Lotus House: “Thank you for wanting to be a part of the success of every woman completing our program. We appreciate all that you have done and we are eagerly waiting to work with you again. Love, The Lotus House Family.”
Thank you and congratulations to Sandra Fairman, the chair of the Foundation’s Wine Walk held on March 22 and to the Clarkes, the Harts and the Freelands who opened their beautiful homes for the evening’s festivities. As with all of the fundraising events this year, the Wine Walk drew guests from our sustainer base whose loyalty is a true testament to the continued strength and vitality of the Junior League of Miami.
Active members I haven’t forgotten about you. You came out in record numbers to vote at our March voting meeting. Now, let’s see everyone (actives, provisionals and sustainers!) again for the April 10th morning/evening general membership meetings where you can complete your placement interviews and help with the Mother’s Day baskets for ITN and ITS.
As you think about placements for next year, please note the recent amendment to the Standing Rules. Members who have been active for three years may select advisory status [a meetings only or placement only option]. This is a change from the previous five-year requisite for advisory status.
A few more reminders before you read our other announcements below Please submit your nominations for the Volunteer of the Year and the Rebecca Herndon Bush Awards to Andria Hanley at ahanley@cdschools.com by Tuesday, April 10th. Jennifer Herskowitz, the scrapbook chair, asks that you email any league photos to her if they aren’t already posted on our website’s Photo Gallery.
And, please mark your calendars for Lunching with the League on Thursday April 12th at two locations HQ and downtown. Details will follow shortly on the web. And now for the rest of the news...

March 15, 2007
Dear Members:
It’s hard to believe that we are just two general membership meetings away from the end of the league year. The March meeting this week started our transition into next year as we voted for our community projects, slated leadership positions and incoming nominating committee. We also recognized the Kathryn Menke Miller Community Service Award honorees and awarded $6,000 in scholarships to three outstanding high school seniors. The scholarship winners were: Brittney Jones from Miami Jackson Senior High School, Jasmin Qyyum from South Miami Senior High School and Giselle Serrano from Miami Lakes Education Center. Thank you to committee chair Holly Troup for her great job with the selection process and honoree reception. Past JLM president and Board member of Informed Families Debbie Korge rounded out the evening with some sound advice on what parents can do now with their young children to help them navigate their teen years.
Please take a few minutes to check out other league news below and encourage your friends and colleagues to attend our next Membership Open House and join our fine league.

Dear JLM Members:
We love them - the area meetings. Thank you placement chair Jana Hertz, chair elect Barbara Oikle and the entire placement committee for working so hard planning these gatherings. Last week, at ten homes across the County, over 200 actives, provisionals and even some sustainers attended the area meetings and told us what they want - more chances to get to know each other better in smaller settings.
Two perfect opportunities for this are coming up - the JLM Family Picnic on Saturday January 27th at Jaycee Park in Coral Gables and the sustainer’s Miami River Boat Tour on February 24. Actives, provisionals and sustainers are invited to both. Details follow.
For those who would like to serve on the signature project ad hoc committee but have not yet contacted President Elect Lauren Harrison Genovese, please contact Lauren for more information about the signature project ad hoc committee’s first meeting on Tuesday, January 30th.
On February 13th, we return to Headquarters for our morning general membership meeting, social 9am and meeting 9:30am, and the Country Club of Coral Gables for our evening general membership, social 6pm and meeting 7pm, meeting where our provisionals will present their fall projects to us. Two dynamic authors will also speak.
2006 Award Winner for Humor, (and a Junior League member) author Annibelle Robertson speaks about her new book, “Southern Girl’s Guide to the Newlywed Years,” a funny tale about surviving the first few years (and beyond) of marriage at our February 13th morning meeting at HQ at 9:30 a.m.
Our February 13th evening general membership meeting speaker is Linda Fairstein on the topic of domestic violence and her latest novel in a series of mysteries entitled BAD BLOOD a fast paced narrative involving New York City’s hidden past with an electrifying contemporary case featuring cutting-edge forensic breakthroughs. Lawyer and NY Times bestselling author, Ms. Fairstein headed the Sex Crime’s Unit of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office for over 30 years and created the country’s very first ‘cold case’ unit in the Manhattan DA’s office.
