About the Junior League of Miami, Inc.

The Junior League of Miami, founded in 1926, is an organization of more than 1,000 women sharing a common vision to empower Miami's women, children, and families to conquer tomorrow's challenges and to build a united community.

The mission of the Junior League of Miami is to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

The Junior League of Miami carries out its mission by selecting community projects each year for which members will devote volunteer hours and funding. In order to respond to mounting social problems in our community, the Junior League of Miami is governed by its strategic plan which calls for partnerships with other non-profit agencies which focus on families at risk. The Junior League concentrates its resources to make a significant impact on our community within the areas of homelessness, family violence, child health, child care/parent support and foster care. Please review our Community Projects.

Education and Advocacy

Education and advocacy have been the heart and soul of the Junior League of Miami throughout its 80+ years of volunteer work in this community.

Advocacy has been a part of nearly every project undertaken by the women of the League and community partners. Our efforts seek to raise awareness and often to influence legislation pertaining to our focus area, Families at Risk. Standing for what we believe to be right is not an idle or an isolated action. Rather, it is intimately tied to what we believe about our world and the hope we have for our community.

For the Junior League, this has meant taking a stand about children's and women's issues and rights, about family issues, mental health, the environment, historical preservation, domestic violence, racial harmony. . .the list of our commitments is endless. Some challenges have been overcome; many will, unfortunately, continue.

Advocacy will become even more important as funds for direct service to those in need become more scarce. Members of the Junior League of Miami pledge to be there, to speak and to stand for those people and issues that will depend upon our efforts for survival. "History of Advocacy"

Children

Throughout its history, the volunteering women of the Junior League have planted the seeds for many children's programs still part of this community today.

Some early Junior League programs have grown into major institutions, like the Children's Home Society, begun in the early 1930s, and the Miami Museum of Science, started by the League in 1949 in a house on Biscayne Blvd. (Read about our History of Involvement with Children's Issues)

In more recent history, the Junior League has continued to dedicate its volunteer and financial resources to programs that tackle the toughest challenges facing today's kids. Teaming up with community partners, the League has helped develop CHARLEE Porgram, Guardian Ad Litem, INN Transition, the Family Visitation Center, the Children's Cultural Connection and a myriad of other projects.

All to fulfill a dream. . .for a better life for the children and families of our community, our greatest asset.

The Junior League of Miami is one of nearly 300 Leagues affiliated with the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc., which has 200,000 volunteers.
