Children's Cultural Connection

Family Learning Partnership 
Building a Family of Readers

Volunteers will select four site locations to pilot the Shared Beginnings programs. Volunteers will receive required trainings in early literacy strategies over the summer. Programs will take place in October, December and March. Co-Chairs: Carolyn Krissel and Theresa Melement

Family Literacy Through Shared Beginnings
(Ended in 2005)
This project focuses on developing family literacy. The Early Childhood Initiative foundation sees family literacy outreach as a major parent skills-building and family empowerment vehicle. The Junior League volunteers participate on the Literacy Coalition Advisory Group, along with other community leaders. This advisory group is charged with establishing a Family Literacy Coalition.

Family Resource Center/Hurwit Crisis Nursery

Foster Care Review
(Ended in 2005)
Volunteers will assist the citizen review panels with gathering specific information from the foster care parents about children in their care. FCR will train the JLM volunteers and provide them with a script of questions to ask the foster care parents. FCR and the JLM volunteers will work together to establish a protocol for gathering the information and delivering that information to the review specialists in advance of the panel reviews. JLM volunteers will be assigned to one of three review specialists. Co-Chairs: Betty Gilbert and Dana Martorella

Girls Advocacy Project (GAP)

Working with girls in the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Detention Center, volunteers fill the gaps in the Juvenile Justice System. Educational group discussions provide support while assisting girls in improving the decisions they make in their daily lives. Chair: Katherine Hartmeyer
