Members of the Coral Gables-based Junior League of Miami recently got together at Lotus House, a non-profit apartment complex for homeless women and children in Overtown, to create a garden space for the residents.

Completing a project that began in the fall of 2011, the Junior League “Done In A Day” project on Nov. 3 brought greenery and shade to the areas of the women’s shelter that had been previously underutilized due to being overgrown in some areas and lacking in shade in others.

“The Junior League of Miami is thrilled to once again partner with Lotus House,” said Junior League of Miami President Katie Lane Arriola of Coral Gables. “We share a common goal, breaking the cycle of homelessness, particularly that of women and their families.

“Lotus House continues to be a sanctuary in our city for those who are challenged by these circumstances, and we hope that we have helped, even just a little bit, to make their home more peaceful and therapeutic. There have been so many stories of success and triumph from Lotus House over the last few years, and we are certain that there will be many more to come,” Ms. Arriola said.

Lotus House is a unique resource center and residential facility serving homeless women and infants in the heart of the historic African- American district of Overtown, Miami, an area suffering from extreme poverty in one of the poorest large cities in the United States. Lotus House provides free transitional housing and wrap around support services with access to a wide range of resources.
