The Coral Gables-based Junior League of Miami (JLM) held its first meeting of the 2012-13 season on Tuesday evening, Sept. 11, at the University of Miami Alumni Center.

The program, which included a 9/11 remembrance, featured Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho as keynote speaker.

Supt. Carvalho discussed the $1.2 billion school bond issue on the November ballot. He said passage is critical for renovating facilities, updating technology, building school replacements, expanding student capacity and enhancing facility safety.

In addition to the great keynote speaker at the general membership meeting, some exciting news was also shared — as of March 31, 2012, the JLM Foundation’s total fund balance exceeded $1,000,000.

Due to the milestone having been reached, an annual distribution will be presented to JLM. This year, on behalf of the JLM Foundation, JLMF Immediate Past President Karelia Martinez Carbonell and JLMF Incoming President Michelle Ramirez-Patricios presented a check for $16,946.04 to JLM President Katie Lane-Arriola.

Lane-Arriola states: “JLM extends its gratitude to the 1926 Society, and all the Sustaining Members who have contributed to the JLMF over the years.  Your stewardship for the future of our league has been an incredible gift, which will allow us to remain strong and solvent for many years to come. ”

The Junior League of Miami is a volunteer organization of close to 1,000 women sharing a common vision to empower Miami’s women, children and families. JLM works on community projects that address homelessness, family violence, children’s and women’s health, early childhood development and foster care.
